Welcome to Freestyle Flower Mandalas!

Mandala means sacred circle in Sanskrit. In many cultures, mandalas are sacred pieces of art that are used to represent the Universe and other sacred symbols. They are also used as tools to focus and to aid in meditation. Traditional mandalas are highly structured and symmetrical. Freestyle mandalas don’t require precise measuring and are a great way to relax, loosen up your perfectionism, and get in touch with your intuition. You can easily get lost in playing with colors and patterns.

I have always loved the look of traditional mandalas but I found them intimidating. They seemed too complex and detailed to me. Then I found out they require a lot of measuring and that turned me off. I’m more of a “go with the flow” kind of gal. One night, I began experimenting with doing mandalas freehand and I was hooked!. It was more about the process than the finished product. Creating them freehand allowed me to let go, and be spontaneous and intuitive. The end result was a little “wonky,” imperfect, and uneven, but to me, that is part of their charm!

Now if precise measuring is more your thing, more power to you! There’s nothing wrong with that but even more detailed types can benefit from loosening up their perfectionism and letting go a little!

Freestyle mandalas are wonderful to do when you find yourself without much time to do art, or are stressed out, or feeling uninspired. I hope this course will inspire you to jump start your own mandala making practice.   Be sure to share your mandalas in my Facebook Art Community or on Instagram and tag me @cat.l.taylor.

I can’t wait to see your mandalas!

Happy arting!
